Theatre mission


 Perm Theatre «U Mosta» is an author’s theatre, which keeps and continues the best traditions of Russian psychological theatre as well as combines the idea of a repertoire theatre and a laboratory theatre.


The repertoire is based on a combination of the best examples of Russian and European classics, contemporary Russian and foreign playwriting, along with the theater productions and projects created across different genres.

- The classical part of the repertoire includes: the Gogol cycle («The Gamblers», «Marriage», «The Government Inspector», «Pannochka», «Evenings on a farm near Dikanka»),  the Bulgakov triad («The Master and Margarita», «Zoya’s Apartment», «Heart of a Dog»), the Shakespeare trilogy («Hamlet», «Romeo and Juliet», «Twelfth Night»), performances based on plays by A.Ostrovsky «Balzaminov’s Marriage», G.Kvitka-Osnovianenko «Shelmenko-the striker», A.Chekhov «33 swoons», N.Erdman «The Suicide»,  C.Galdoni «The Mistress of the Inn», M.Gorky «The Lower Depths».

- Modern playwriting is presented by productions from the McDonagh cycle («A Behanding in Spokane», «The Cripple of Inishmaan», «The Beauty Queen of Leenane», «The Lonesome West», «A Skull in Connemara», «The Lieutenant of Inishmore»); by performances based on plays by M.Myllyaho («Panic»), R.Familiari («Scent»), O.Bogaev («Sansara»), N. Kolyada («Hen»).

- Musical staging of rock operas «Star and Death of Joaquin Murrieta» and «Juno and Avos» by A.Rybnikov has taken a particularly special place in repertoire of the theatre. They enabled the Theatre to master vocal and choreographic skills as one more component in search of new forms of the theatre. The staging of «Dracula» based on the play by B. Stoker has gone beyond a usual repertoire content, having opened for the Theatre an experience of an interactive, hyper-atmospheric action in which the audience literally becomes a full participant of the history, exploring the dungeons of Count Dracula’s castle.


The «U Mosta» Theatre is planning to expand its repertoire, gradually developing each of the styles. Such kind of principle of repertoire policy structure facilitates, firstly, the development of the Theatre’s creative method of energy, atmosphere and sharp psychological environment, secondly, the laboratory exploration of the artistic world of a certain author and, thirdly, the search and invention of a new theatrical language, new principles and techniques of the actors’ existence on the stage.


The significance of mystical theme in choice of authors and their works for staging is especially notable. The mysticism, on the one hand, becomes a mean of expression of a special worldview, specific for the «U Mosta» Theatre, a cultural and philosophical awareness of the human «me» in the world order, finding the sense of such categories as fate, predetermination and power of some superpowers over people. On the other hand, mysticism is a metaphor of the artistic method, the author’s transformation of the system of psychological theatre. This is a development of the actor’s skills to embody the deeper spheres of human subconscious with the language of theatre on the stage.


The «U Mosta» Theatre is actively developing two main directions in its practice, that is the presentation of the performances from the repertoire at the main stage and the intense festival activity. This becomes possible exactly because from the very beginning the «U Mosta» Theatre has purported to refute a common myth that a Theatre-Laboratory is being unable to become a Theatre for a wide audience. The repertoire performances in the Theatre «U Mosta» are created and exist within the logic of a theatre research laboratory and at the same time they turn out to be interesting not only to ordinary audience but to the professional theatre audience, theatre practitioners and theorists as well. 


Usually the theatre takes part in the festivals 10-12 times per season. At the same time 50-70 performances are presented at «home» stage and 6-7 premieres are being staged per year. The theatre provides access to its performances for the audience: there is a ticket discount system for students and undeserved people. There are matinees for the young audience almost every day.


The festival activity is an integral part of the theatre’s life, a prerequisite for its aesthetic development, adequate assessment of its artistic method and its role in modern theatrical process. During the festivals the director Sergei Fedotov constantly carries out seminars and trainings based on M.Chekhov’s system.


The cycles of educational events during the rehearsals: trainings, lectures, screenings, meetings with experts in different fields of knowledge, - are being constantly organized for the actors of the theatre.
